Lenormand Cards

Learning to draw cards: the Rider

Key words: Good news, fast travel

9 ♥️

To really get to know Miss Lenormand's cards, it's essential to get to grips with them so as to memorize them better. Deciphering the symbols used throughout history is an essential part of this journey. Each symbol tells a story, a fragment of ancient wisdom that spans the ages. By delving into these symbols, you connect to a rich and mysterious heritage, where each image is a portal to profound revelations.

As you familiarize yourself with these symbols, you begin to see beyond the images. You discover hidden links, deeper meanings that gradually reveal themselves. It's a bit like learning a new language: at first, the words seem foreign, but with time and practice, they become a natural part of your vocabulary.

So let's start by describing this Rider card together if you don't mind. 😊

The French version of the Cavalier card from the Lenormand game, with a rider standing upright on his horse and a text next to it.

Did you catch it? It's the 9 from ♥️ (1). In the French version, the image is of a gallant man standing upright on his horse. His horse is trotting (hop hop) along a path (2). In the distance, a castle can be seen (3). One wonders whether he's setting off from here to deliver news to another place, or whether he's already delivered his message.

Horses can be used for both short and long journeys. That's why it's hard to know if this rider has come from afar to bring his message and announce a visit.

The French version has the following text:

Ce cavalier trottant
Apporte apparemment
Bonnes nouvelles...
mais
Vient-il de loin, de près ?

This trotting rider
Apparently brings
Good news...
but
Does he come from far or near?

The poem evokes the arrival of a messenger (the Cavalier) who seems to bring good news, but there is uncertainty as to the origin of this news.

The question of whether the rider comes from far or near adds a dimension of mystery and intrigue, suggesting that the provenance of the news could influence its importance or impact.

You see, this poem could be interpreted as a metaphor for the messages and revelations the cards bring. The horseman represents the messenger, and the question of his origin could symbolize the depth or immediacy of the revelations the cards reveal.
Ah, the great question of time. More on this below...

Let's continue with another card, this time without text.

The textless version of the Cavalier card from the Petit Jeu Lenormand, with a rider standing upright on his horse and a text next to it.

Similarities can be observed. Nine of hearts (1), Path (2), Trotting Horse, Hill, Château (3).

The rider is perched on his mount, contemplating a rolling, verdant landscape. This soothing view contributes to a feeling of well-being and serenity. But beyond this peaceful image, how should we interpret this card?

Note the reading order. I always start with the value and suit of the card (old reflex). We'll come back to these notions in another post on the Piquet game. For your part, you'll focus on the main subject (2) at first. Then, once you've got a feel for the card and gauged its symbols, you can move on to the details of the card by analyzing the elements around the main object (3) a little more closely.

Let the Pony Express through!

The Pony Express was the Formula 1 of its day for sending letters at lightning speed - well, the lightning speed of the 1860s! An adventure worthy of the best Westerns, where each letter was a little epic in itself!

The Cavalier, in Miss Lenormand's play, is much more than a mere observer. He is the messenger, the one who brings the news, whether good or bad. Like a tireless steed, he crosses hills and valleys to deliver his messages with diligence.

When the Horseman appears in your draw, be prepared to receive important information. Perhaps it's good news that will brighten your day, or perhaps a revelation that will spur you into action. ...
